In this course, students will be able to relate to words and expressions from the Bhagavad Gītā in the following areas:
In this course, students will study the origin of the Saṃskṛtam sounds, parts of speech and pronunciations. They will identify the differents parts of simple Saṃskṛtam sentences such as nouns, pronouns and verbs. They will also compose small sentences putting together these parts of speech. Students will explore the concept of person, number and gender in Saṃskṛtam. Progressively, students will recognize subject, object and verb forms in sentences. This course also introduces students to different cases in Saṃskṛtam and students will be able to employ the first and sixth cases in sentences in simple present tense forms. Students will be introduced to the Bhagavad Gītā, the concept of a poetic meter (chanda) and how simple verses from chapter 1 of the Bhagavad Gītā can be chanted or recited in the anuśtubh poetic meter. Students will read and recite the Bhagavad Gītā ślokas from Chapter 1 and the meanings will be explained to the them.
Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge gained in previous classes. Regular homework assignments will provide valuable opportunities to practice the concepts covered in class. Successful completion of the course requires the submission of graded homework and the final Quarter End Exam (QEE).
