Course Description

SAN7107 – Jyotiṣa basic course offers a comprehensive introduction to Jyotiṣa, the traditional Indian system of astronomy and astrology. Focusing on foundational concepts, historical significance, and practical applications, it explores the influence of celestial bodies on human life. Students will learn to identify key constellations and planets, understand their significance, and delve into the core principles of Vedic astrology. Through this knowledge, they will be able to predict auspicious timings (muhūrthas) for any undertakings. They will additionally be able to interpret birth charts, gaining insights into how the cosmos impacts daily activities and life events. This exploration deepens the student’s understanding of the universe's role in shaping human experiences.

Course Learning Objectives:

In this course students will be able to:

  • Identify the 27 nakṣatras (lunar mansions) and grahas (planets) used in Jyotiṣa.
  • Establish an understanding of why these nakṣatras are sufficient in Jyotiṣa śāstra.
  • Explain the fundamental concepts of Indian astronomy and astrology, including their relationship with each other (e.g., how astronomical observations inform astrological interpretations).
  • Apply the knowledge of graha characteristics in predicting potential influences on a chosen Muhūrta (auspicious time) for any specific activity.
  • Analyze the role of the Pañcāṅgam system (calendar system with five elements) and the bhachakra (zodiac wheel) in the interpretation of a janma-kunḍali (birth chart) and explain their combined influence on daily life.

Course Content

❖Identification of Nakṣatras and Grahas
Students will learn to recognize and name the 27 Nakṣatras (lunar constellations) and the nine primary Grahas (planets) in Vedic astrology. This foundational knowledge is essential for understanding their influence on terrestrial events and individual horoscopes.
❖Significance of Nakṣatras in Jyotiṣa Śāstra
This module explores why these 27 Nakṣatras are the crux of Jyotiṣa Śāstra, examining their historical, mythological, and practical significance. Students will gain insights into how these Nakṣatras comprehensively shape astrological interpretations.
❖Fundamentals of Indian Astronomy and Astrology
Students will learn key principles of Indian astronomy, including the movement and positioning of celestial bodies. The course will highlight how astronomical observations inform astrological predictions, demonstrating the deep interconnection between the two disciplines.
❖Application of Graha Characteristics in Muhūrta Selection
This section focuses on understanding the characteristics of each Graha and their role in determining Muhūrta (auspicious timing). Through practical exercises, students will apply this knowledge to predict favorable times for personal and societal activities.
❖Understanding the Pañcāṅga System and Bhachakra
Students will analyze the Pañcāṅga (five-element Vedic calendar) and Bhachakra (zodiac wheel) in relation to Janma-Kuṇḍalī (birth chart) interpretation. The course will cover the five Pañcāṅga elements—Tithi (lunar day), Vāra (weekday), Nakṣatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (Sun-Moon combination), and Karaṇa (half Tithi)—and their impact on daily life and decision-making.

Class Structure

Each MSV course comprises 45 hours of teaching and with 2 quizzes and 2 assignments. The number of assignments and quizzes change subject to faculty discretion. Final exams for all courses conducted at the end of the semester.
